Places To See - Munnar

CSI Church

Mrs Eleanor Knight, wife of H.M Knight, the General Manager of the plantation, was buried here in 1894. In the following years a few soldiers and some British people were also buried in the area. This place of burial was formally consecrated on 15 April 1900, on Easter Day.

Built in black basalt the church still has its 14 old, rosewood pews. Inside the church are antique chandeliers, and brass plaques built in memory of influential tea planters of the time. The church was sanctified in 1910.

In 1981, when the British left Munnar, they handed over the church to the CSI North Kerala Diocese. It currently has around 1,000 Tamil families and supports 18 outstation churches.
