About Munnar
Munnar, in Idukki district of Kerala, is one of India’s best hill stations. The place gets its name from the three rivers that meet at the town – Nallathani, Muthipuzha and Kundala rivers. Munnar is known for its tea plantations, lakes, rivers, tourist spots, churches and temples.
Travellers from Madurai and nearby areas of Tamil Nadu passed through the villages in Anchanad in the early 19th century. The Kannan Devan Hills here are named after Kannan Thevar, the head man of the villages. It was in 1877 that the Poonjar Raja gave J.D. Munro 500sq.km of land. Munro converted them into tea plantations.
Munnar, with its high peaks, valleys and wildlife reserves, is a good place for trekking and nature-related activities. The 2,695-metre-high Anaimudi peak, south India’s highest peak, is located in Eravikulam National Park, in Munnar. Munnar has many avenues for trekking, mountain climbing and paragliding. After visiting the tourist spots in Munnar, tourists can go shopping. You can buy good quality tea, spices, honey, and other hill produce.
Munnar is only four hours away from Cochin, and the nearest railway station is in Kottayam. Cochin International Airport connects you with the major cities in India and abroad. There are buses and taxis from Cochin, Kottayam, Thekkady, Trivandrum and north Kerala.
